“What I want from my paintings: They should not look like they were painted, but came into being whole.”

— Carole Wellen

early works

My early paintings in the 1970’s were mostly done in oil on canvas. They included figures (painted from models) and still lifes.

still lifes

The colors and compositions of still lifes fascinate me.

landscapes

The greens, the blues, fall’s vibrant colors, and diffused winter grays. The pines, the woods, the marshes, the water and sands. The landscape of New Jersey provides all the elements for painting. I loved coming into my studio to see my landscapes grow.

skyscapes

The sky is a source of ever changing beauty and energy. I wanted to capture the movement of the sky in one moment of time before it transforms to another. With that in mind, I created 64 small square acrylic paintings, 8”x 8”, on hand cut cardboards which I call tiles. These tiles fit nicely into a custom-made blue material Skyscape box. Other paintings in the Skyscape series vary in size and medium. This series spans from 2014-2021.

figures

Whether drawing or painting, I continue to return to the human figure for expressive movements.

abstract

Abstract and design seem to meld together as a way of seeing and thinking. Here are two abstract paintings, but other pieces of my abstract work fit into design elements.
