“Design is how the pieces fit together.”

patches & pieces

Patches and Pieces is a series of paintings I began in the mid-1980’s which were inspired by my friendship with a group of New England quilters. I was intrigued by the classic patch designs and their specific names. My early works used the patch names as a cue for expression. Later patches, created in the 90’s, became more abstract, incorporating collage and metallic appearing surfaces. Each patch is 8”x 8” Acrylic on Board, framed and matted 14”x 18”. Pieces refer to various sized acrylic paintings in the series.

masks

I think the whole idea of masks is frightening: the construction and design of the mask, what it portrays, and what it hides. In 1999 I created a series of 20 mask designs in pen and ink on parchment paper, each 8.5”x 11”. My idea was to conjure an imagined ancient culture.

oddities

It seems to me that oddities would be part of the workings of the inner mind. Drawing is one way the artist taps into the subconscious as well as the tangible. When I draw, thoughts, humor, and strange compositions transfer onto the paper.

prints

These drawings (pen and ink/pencil) 2013, made into giclée prints take on a clean glossy contemporary look with creamy white borders. Images approx. 5”x 7.5” printed on Pro Platinum paper 8.5”x 11”.

paintings

Often paintings arise from experimental designs with geometric shapes that fit together or ideas of a symbolic nature.
